When I try to canter my Quarter horse, he always does a really fast trot first?
The trot is so fast that sometimes I have to post to keep
My balance and my trainer and I don't want to spur him, cause he's not bad.
Before going into the canter, sit down and back, dont throw away your outside rein, dont lean forward (sit down and back [I know I just said this]), and ask. Try two or three more times if he doesnt listen. Then try applying a whip. You dont have to smack him hard, but maybe just let the whip bounce off of his side. Dont be afraid to put some force behind your leg aids or your whip if you have to. **Dont ask for his head to come up. That just hollows his back out and makes it harder for both horse and rider. if anything, his neck should be parallel to the ground with his face perpendicular to the ground so his back is round and stretched.
A good way to get a horse to respond quickly to your leg is to ask for a higher gait from a slower gait, and if he doesnt respond, try a couple more times, then use more force, like a whip. Your horse will quickly catch on. And youre not being mean by doing this. Trust me. Start from a halt to a walk, then walk to trot, etc.
