For a degree in Psychology, how deep into brain chemistry do you go?
For example, I know (well, as far as I can remember... hope this is correct!) that valium agonises receptor sites of Gamma-Aminobutyric acid, preventing excitatory neurons from firing by increasing the chlorine ions which reach the receptor sites... And therefore having an inhibitory (ie, less arousal) effect on the central nervous system, making you feel calmer? Is this correct?
My main question is this: How deep do you go into brain chemistry, like in this example i'm explaining, for degree level psychology? Would they go further than I just described above, about the valium? Or does degree level psychology only "skim over" the basics of biochemistry, and concentrate more on the overall field more?

I would think that you would go slightly deeper into the brain chemistry, but not into real detail like someone doing a medicine or biochemistry degree would.... You'd just have to learn all what you need to know in order to improve your understanding of the brain and behaviour, in order to be a psychologist and have a firm understanding of how biology shapes behaviour.
